About

I am a husband, father of three, college professor, biologist, and urban outdoorsman. Most importantly, though, I am follower of Jesus Christ. As a scientist and outdoorsman, I am drawn to God in His creation. In fact, that’s how I came to know Him in the first place.

As an urban outdoorsman, I spend most of my time in the city, not by preference, but by calling. I look for opportunities each day, each week to find restoration for my soul in God’s creation. And a few heavenly weekends each year, I get to plunge deep into the quiet waters of the California Sierras, or the Idaho or Montana Rockies, or the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest.

When I do get out of the city I enjoy hiking, camping, and fly fishing.

Hi Dr. Cummings! I recently read your article A Bear on the Loose: When Habits are Mindless and Stress Goes Unchecked in the PLNU magazine. Thank you for sharing your story. It was a great encouragement to my heart. I took your microbiology class in 2005. Your passion for the Creator was contagious then and I’m glad to see God continuing to use you today! Thanks again. Sincerely, Kathryn Stauffer
